Changes to self assessment deadlines

Tax returns for the current tax year (2007/08) will have to be filed earlier than previous years. The new deadline for paper returns will be 31 October 2008 while returns submitted online will keep their deadline the same, at 31 Jannary 2009.

The tax enquiry window is also changing. Rather than being one year after the filing deadline, it will become one year after the return is actually submitted. So, by submitting your return early you will also be bringing forward the deadline for the Taxman to raise any questions.
