If you have recently applied to become VAT registered, you may have to wait up to 12 weeks, although HMRC may complete the job more quickly if the VAT 1 does not require amendment, and there are no queries.
HMRC made this announcement yesterday, following a growing number of complaints about how long it takes to process a VAT registration.
Also, you can expect a long delay if you are dealing in any of the goods that are usually characteristic in cases of Carousel fraud, such a mobile phones, computer chips and electronics.
A new VAT 1 application form and guidance notes are due to be launched towards the end of November 2006 which it is hoped will reduce general processing times.

do it online, via your agent if necessary; it is much quicker
I recently registered for VAT online. I completed the online form on the 26th September for registration commencing 1st October 2006. On the 6th October I had my registration certificate back. I have to say I was amazed!
