Online self assessment submissions

5.8 million taxpayers submitted their 2007/08 tax returns online by the 31 Jan 09 deadline.  This is about 2/3 rds of all tax returns. The busiest time was Friday afternoon on 30 Jan when 390,000 returns were submitted.

As is normal practice, the 15,000 people who submitted their return on 1 Feb will escape the £100 late filing penalty even though the return is technically late.
